Keeping Your Domain Alive: Renewals and the Email You Must Not Ignore.

DOMAIN · 3 MIN READ · WRITTEN FOR PEOPLE WHO OWN THEIR OWN SITE

Nobody loses a domain to hackers. They lose it to an expired card and a renewal notice in a dead inbox. Then the domain lapses, a squatter grabs it, and the business that spent five years printing it on trucks gets to buy it back at ransom pricing. Entirely preventable, three settings:

01 Auto-renew, on, forever

It's one toggle in your registrar account. $10 to $15 a year charges quietly and your address never blinks. Turn it on the day you buy and never think about it again.

02 A payment card that stays current

Auto-renew fails silently when the card on file expires. When your bank reissues a card, the registrar goes on the same update list as your other subscriptions. Better: some registrars let you keep an account balance a year ahead.

03 An email address that outlives everything

Your registrar account email is where every warning goes, and here's the trap: don't use an email on the domain itself. If yourshop.com lapses, you@yourshop.com dies with it, taking the recovery emails down in the same fire. Use a personal Gmail or similar that exists independently.

The one email to always open: anything from your registrar with "expiration" or "verify" in the subject. ICANN requires a yearly contact-verification email, and ignoring it can suspend the domain even when it's paid. Thirty seconds of clicking beats a week of recovery.

Q My domain expired yesterday. Is it gone?

Probably not yet. Most registrars give a grace window (often up to 30 days) to renew at normal price, then a redemption period at a painful fee, then public release. Act the day you notice.

Q I registered through a web designer who vanished. Now what?

If you can prove the business connection, registrars and ICANN have recovery processes, but it's slow. This is the scenario the ownership rule exists to prevent.

Q Should I register for multiple years at once?

It's fine and slightly cheaper long-term, but auto-renew plus a working card achieves the same immortality with less cash up front.

Rather have someone who does this every day handle it? That's the $75/mo plan. Or keep going solo, that's the whole point of these guides.
