Why "We Get All Our Business From Word of Mouth" Is Costing You Money

May 27, 2026 · Nick Lavelle · Bad Habit Design

Every owner who says "all my business is word of mouth" says it with pride, and they should. Referrals mean the work is good. But here is the uncomfortable math hiding inside that sentence.

Word of mouth has a leak

When somebody recommends you at a barbecue, the next thing that person does is pull out a phone and look you up. Not to call, to check. They want to see the reviews, the photos, some proof the recommendation holds up.

If the lookup comes back empty, a chunk of your referrals evaporate before they ever ring your phone. You never see these losses. Nobody calls to tell you they did not call.

Two thirds of people say a business with a real website is more credible than one without. A referral is a warm lead, and a dead-end lookup runs it cold.

Word of mouth also does not scale on your schedule

Referrals arrive when they arrive. Slow month? You cannot ask the town to gossip harder. The businesses that ride out slow seasons are the ones findable by strangers, because strangers are the only unlimited market you have.

Make every referral worth two

Word of mouth is the best advertising there is. Just stop making it whisper.
