Every week we scan trade businesses across the country and check one thing: can a stranger actually find them online? Our database just crossed 5,662 businesses across 71 cities and 32 trades, and every single one of them has no website. Not a bad website. None.
Here is what the data says as of July 2026.
The headline numbers
- 1,701 of 5,662 businesses (30%) hold a perfect 5.0 star rating on Google.
- 3,484 (62%) sit at 4.5 stars or better.
- The average business in our database has a 4.49 rating and 56 reviews.
- 804 businesses have crossed 100 reviews. That is years of documented, five-star work.
- The single biggest reputation we found: a shop with 3,359 Google reviews and zero web presence.
- Only 435 of 5,662 (under 8%) have so much as a Facebook page linked to their listing.
Who shows up most
The trades with the most invisible businesses in our data:
- Auto body shops: 679 (average rating 4.59)
- Auto repair shops: 660 (4.55)
- Tire shops: 627 (4.39)
- Transmission shops: 509 (4.53)
- Electricians: 393 (4.57)
Notice the pattern. These are not struggling businesses. The auto body shops in our database average 4.59 stars. These are the best shops in their towns. They are just invisible to anyone who has not already driven past them.
Why this matters more every month
When somebody searches "transmission shop near me," Google ranks results on relevance, distance, and prominence. Reviews carry prominence, but relevance comes from what Google can read about you. No website means Google is guessing from a category label, and guessing loses to the shop down the road with a real site.
The newer problem is AI search. ChatGPT and the tools replacing the phone book can only recommend businesses they can read about. A 5.0 rating with 200 reviews and no website is a reputation the machines cannot see.
The gap is the opportunity
Put the two facts together. Thirty percent of these businesses have perfect ratings. Under eight percent have any web presence at all. That means the market is full of elite operators competing on word of mouth alone while their weakest competitors outrank them with mediocre reviews and a $50 template site.
