Before you spend a dime on ads, spend five minutes on the free listing Google already gave you. For local trades, the Google Business Profile is the single highest-leverage piece of real estate on the internet, and most of the ones we look at are half empty.
The five fields that do the heavy lifting
- Primary category. Be exact. "Tire shop" beats "Auto repair" if tires are the money-maker, because Google matches searches to categories first.
- Hours. Wrong hours are worse than no hours. A customer who drives to a closed shop leaves a one-star souvenir.
- Services list. Every service you add is another search you can match. Brake service, alignments, state inspections, list them all.
- Photos. Listings with real photos of real work get dramatically more calls than logo-only listings. Your phone camera is fine. Post the truck, the shop, the finished job.
- Phone number. One number, same everywhere on the internet. Google cross-checks consistency and quietly rewards it.
Businesses that answer their listing questions and keep photos fresh show up in the local pack far more often. The pack gets the calls: most people never scroll past it.
The part everyone skips
Open your profile once a week and post one photo. That is it. Google treats an active listing like an open store and a stale one like a dusty window. Five minutes on Monday morning, before the coffee is gone.
Your listing is the handshake. Just remember a handshake is not a storefront, and the businesses winning your town have both.
