A growing slice of your future customers will never see a search results page. They ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or the assistant built into their phone "who is a good plumber near me" and call whoever gets named. No scrolling, no comparing, one answer.
How the machine picks
AI assistants recommend businesses from what they can read about them online. Not what your customers know. Not your reputation at the coffee shop. What is written, on pages the machine can reach: your website, your Google listing, directories, review text.
What actually makes you recommendable
- A real website that states, in plain text, what you do, where you do it, and how to reach you. AI cannot watch your Facebook video. It reads.
- Structured data (the technical word is schema) that labels your business name, services, area, and hours in machine-readable form. It is the difference between the machine guessing and the machine knowing.
- Consistency everywhere. Same name, same phone, same address across your site, Google, and directories. Conflicting info makes the machine skip you for someone it can verify.
- Review volume. AI leans on the same trust signals people do.
The window
Here is the opportunity: most of your competitors are not thinking about this yet. The businesses that are readable by machines this year get cited by them for years, because these tools develop habits just like customers do. Early is cheap. Late is expensive.
The phone book died and nobody mourned it. Just make sure you are listed in the one that replaced it.
